About the Science Consortium of Minority Schools (SCMS)
The Science Consortium of Minority Schools (SCMS) was established to create a coalition of minority schools to improve the number of African American and female students who enroll and graduate with STEM degrees. The SCMS provides technical support and services to enhance the curricula and programs offered at the member schools.
The SCMS is led by Meharry Medical College in partnership with Fisk University along with the member schools; Lane College, LeMoyne-Owen College, Tennessee State University, Paine College and Florida A&M University and Tuskegee University.
These schools have a long track record for implementing Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) undergraduate, advance degrees and summer programs. Each of the member schools is dedicated to adding to the nation’s diverse workforce of STEM professionals. This collaboration under the Consortium provides new pathways for recruiting, enrolling and graduating STEM students with degrees in science and engineering.
The goal of the SCMS is to provide new programs and opportunities by sharing resources and faculty, to provide students with more access to scholarships and internships, to expand access to courses in science and engineering and to increase network of STEM mentors. The members of SCMS are committed to creating a more diverse pool of scientists and engineers that meet the critical needs of underserved communities and the nation.
